A lush green lawn: the art of timely watering

Now that the sun is shining again, it is time to enjoy your own garden. You invest in beautiful plants and flowers, colorful planters and beautiful ornamental pots. You sow on time, to soon be surrounded by an amazing array of flowers. And then nothing is more disfiguring than a yellowed, neglected lawn.

Anyone with natural grass in their yard knows that keeping it up properly is a challenge. When is it best to spray and how often? We’ll tell you in this blog.

Why spray your grass?

Normally it rains so regularly in the Netherlands that the yellowed lawns you find in Mediterranean countries hardly ever occur. But in recent years the climate has changed: long periods of drought now occur here, too.

Spraying grass in the summer

During the summer, it is important to take good care of your grass. Whereas rainwater keeps your lawn’s roots strong and protects them from disease, dehydration creates that dull yellow color. This type of withering eventually leads to the grass dying off completely. And that’s a shame! Because where the grass dies, weeds, moss and unwanted plants can thrive. In short: a detriment to the homogeneous appearance of your lawn.

Warning signals that it is spraying time

Of course, you could inspect the grass every day for signs of sagging. But who has time for that these days? A good rule to follow is: when the temperature rises above 20 degrees! Then your grass needs you! Grass can recover from temporary drought, but for a succulent and green lawn, those blades need help.

Spray the grass about 2-3 times a week during these warm times and your grass will thank you. It’s always good to keep an eye on your weather app when doing so, as watering the grass right before a heavy rain is a waste of water and a far cry from an eco-friendly lifestyle! Note that the higher the temperatures rise, the more frequent a watering session is desired.

Do I water my lawn in the morning, afternoon or evening?

If you have green fingers, you probably already know that you should not water your flowers and plants in full sunlight. The sunlight acts as a magnifying glass and burns the leaves. Ouch! The same goes for your lawn. We strongly advise against watering in full sun.

Especially in the early evening, when it has cooled down slightly and the sun is saying goodbye, your grass is extremely grateful to you for a nice sip of water. The water will then also not evaporate due to the heat of the sun. But don’t spray too late either, because then the grass will not fully absorb all the water and mold may develop.

The perfect duration of a spray

Is your grass on clay or sandy soil? This determines the perfect duration of your watering. Clay does not let the water through as quickly, so then a half hour of spraying is enough. With sandy soil you are a little longer, then you can count on a spraying workout of an hour.

Bonus Tip: place a rain gauge, then you will always know exactly when your grass is saturated! At 10 to 15 mm, the grass will remain in top condition.
