The sun is shining, into the garden!
Garden maintenance in March and April

In March, it feels like winter is now really is behind us. And that’s a good thing, because the garden season is also slowly getting back on track. You can see the return of greenery everywhere and flowers like crocuses, daffodils and tulips are back in all their colorful splendor. So it’s really getting fun to go into the garden again! And that’s a good thing, because garden maintenance is also an important item on your program in March and April.

The maintenance chores in your garden are nice and versatile these two months. From sowing and planting to maintenance and care – there’s plenty to do! In March and April, you can work on the following garden tasks:

Taking care of existing plants

After winter, it is important to give some extra attention to the plants in your garden. For example, (fruit) trees, hedges and shrubs could use a shovel of fertilizer. Do not forget the potted plants in your garden: with the cold wind that still blows through the garden regularly in these months, the soil in pots and containers dries out quickly. So water them often and regularly.

Planting new plants

With spring just around the corner, you can also start planting new plants. Just check that you can indeed put the plant you have your eye on in the ground as early as March or April. And do you a vegetable garden? Then you can pre-sow vegetables such as lettuce, spinach and broad beans. This is also a good time to pick out summer-flowering bulbs.

Pruning and weeding

They may not be the most popular garden chores, but pruning and weeding are definitely part of garden maintenance. Remove old, dry leaves and weed out as many weeds as possible. By keeping this up, you will save yourself a lot of extra work later in the season. Plus, it will make you look at a beautifully maintained garden every day.

Scrubbing and polishing

If you want to enjoy your garden to the fullest soon, you also need to start cleaning now. Remove green deposits from the terrace, scrub pots clean and put the garden furniture outside again. You may have to clean the latter as well, but then you will be ready to sit outside with the first warm rays of sunshine!
