Garden maintenance in summer: chores in July and August

Garden maintenance in the summer is definitely not a punishment. The sun is high in the sky, it smells of flowers and herbs and all around you there is life of birds, bees and butterflies. Then your hands are itching to get to work and be outside as long as possible, aren’t they?

Fortunately, you really don’t have to make excuses to be outside. Garden maintenance continues during the summer. With the warm sunshine and occasional showers, plant growth in your garden goes hard. And yes, that includes weeds, of course. However, weeding is not the only summer garden maintenance you can get busy with in July and August. Want to know what other garden chores are on the agenda? You can read about it here!

Preparing your garden for hot days

July and August can be very hot. By making some preparations in advance, you won’t be surprised by a heat wave and you can seek the coolness yourself. So are you working on summer garden maintenance? Then consider these action items as well:

  • Set out a bird bath. Of course, this can also be a nice, large bowl or dish. That way the birds in your garden can quench their thirst as well as take a cooling bath.
  • Create a flat surface for the barbecue or fire pit. Warm summer evenings are perfect for cozy barbecues and hours of chatting by the fire.
  • Provide shade on your patio. When it is hot, you don’t want to be forced to sit inside because you have no shade outside. Don’t have natural shade from trees? Then a large parasol or a canvas over your patio will also help.

Preparing the garden for your vacation

Of course, the summer months are also the vacation months. When you go away, you do want to leave your garden looking good. Therefore, those preparations should definitely not be missing from your summer garden maintenance chore list. For example, take care of the following:

  • If you have plants in pots, put them all together. Much easier for whoever comes to water when you are on vacation.
  • Make a list of vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers that may be harvested or picked while you are away.
  • Mow the grass again the night before you leave.

Tip: Are you going away for an extended period of time? Then a garden subscription might be right for you.

General garden maintenance in the summer

Of course, there are also general garden chores in July and August. Thank goodness, because with the summer weather, it’s obviously great to get to work in the garden. Real summer chores are:

  • Fertilizing your plants. Roses give you special rose fertilizer. If you haven’t already done so this summer, fertilize your border with organic fertilizer. Flowering plants in pots you can give liquid fertilizer.
  • Removing spent flowers from annual and continuous-flowering plants. This keeps them making new flowers longer.
  • Watering your garden in the evening. This makes the water evaporate less quickly.

Of course, chores such as weeding, harvesting and tying up plants also continue in July and August. So you certainly don’t have to be bored, but don’t forget to enjoy your beautiful garden after the hard work. After all, that’s what you’re doing it all for!
